Last week we heard that brilliant Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond The Pines, Starred Up) might be orbiting an unspecified role in the first Star Wars spin-off movie, which will be helmed by Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. Entertainment Weekly gave Mendelsohn a call to see if there was any truth to this, and though he wouldn't confirm or deny anything ("I’m absolutely not sure about any of this at all. It sounds great, and certainly — Wouldn’t that be nice?"), he does reveal that he's a huge fan and makes it clear that it'd be something he'd be interested in.
Was that original trilogy a touchstone for you growing up?
"Enormous. Enormous! I mean, enormous! I’m the kid who had the whole set of trading cards. Enormous! I mean, I was born in 1969. The first one comes out in what, ‘77? The first Star Wars film was an enormously important. I grew up right smack-bang in the sweet spot of all of those. It’s true cinema magic. It’s fair to say that as a kid I would have been very happy to be Han Solo, and I would have been happy to have gone out with Princess Leia. If I could have had Chewie at my side through some difficult times, forget about it."
He then says he only heard about the rumor the other day, but adds: "Who knows? Certainly, that would be very exciting." If Mendelsohn wasn't in line for a role already, based on that I think Edwards should give him a bell! Star Wars: Rogue One will star Felicity Jones and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16, 2016.
