BOX OFFICE: THE HUNGER GAMES Passes GOTG's Domestic Haul

We knew it was only a matter of time, but Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 has officially overtaken Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy as the highest grossing film of 2014 at the US box office. Katniss Everdeen's brilliant, but rather grim third big screen outing was predicted to beat the intergalactic A-holes' $331.1 million take by a comfortable $9M or so, but it actually only narrowly came out on top with a $333.2 million domestic haul. Mockingjay - Part 1 is also the lowest grossing Hunger Games so far, as Catching Fire came out with $425 million domestically last year, and the original movie brought in $408 million in 2012. It should be noted that all of that coin was amassed without the benefit of hiked up 3D or IMAX ticket prices, however. Can the final instalment in the franchise bring Lionsgate out on top at the end of this year? I think Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have something to say about it anyway.
