Why Haven't We Had A Remake Of THE LAST STARFIGHTER?

Many of you might be shocked to learn that at one time Steven Spielberg ("Jurassic Park"), the director that gave birth to the modern day summer blockbuster, had interest in acquiring the film rights to the 1984 movie The Last Starfighter . How do we know this? Seth Rogen ("Neighbors") revealed the information via Twitter four days ago.

See, we all know remakes of classic '80s movies are the current craze in Hollywood and when you think of which films from that era might get remade, The Last Starfighter is usually brought up at some point. This happened four days ago, and that is when Seth Rogen jumped into the conversation to reveal that he and Spielberg, separately, had tried to acquire the film rights. Sadly (or not so sadly), they both came up empty handed.

So what's the hold up?

It seems the film’s writer, Jonathan R. Betuel, retains the rights to all remakes and sequels. According to Rogen, he has absolutely no interest in anything happening with the film. That’s unconfirmed, but you have to imagine pretty accurate. Especially if arguably the most powerful man in Hollywood couldn’t get the rights. - Slash Film

Would you like to see a remake of The Last Starfighter ? Or, should they leave the original alone?

The Last Starfighter (1984) - "Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada." So begins an adventure of galactic proportions in The Last Starfighter. After Earthling Alex (Lance Guest) conquers the Starfighter video game, he is recruited by alien Centauri (Robert Preston) to be part of an elite legion of fighters. Leaving behind his trailer park home for the outer regions of space, Alex becomes the last hope for the beleaguered Star League and hundreds of worlds – including Earth. The Last Starfighter is the ultimate video game fantasy come true!
