EDITORIAL: How I Would Handle the X-Men

Every time I see a comic book property that I don’t feel is being done justice I think to myself, “How would I have done that? Would I have done it this way or that way?”. And after recently seeing DOFP, I asked that question and delved into.

Continuity Errors

"Some things you let go. In X-Men 3 Bolivar Trask was an African-American guy, in X-Men 1 I personally wrote the line that of course I now regret: ‘When I was 17, I met a young man named Erik Lensherr’ and then in X-Men: First Class I changed that! Some of these I hope the audience will forget about but for the bulk of it I pay attention to the universe." -Bryan Singer

See, Fox has made some (And that’s putting it lightly) continuity errors, yet they still go and continue to make more errors. So to calm that problem, I would’ve made the very first X-Men film have the plot of First Class . By doing that, you basically are making a ‘jump-pad’ for you to continue the X-Men saga. It allows you to be more organized and know which pieces fall into what place in the long-run.

I’d also set-up a plan on who would be in what film. For the first X-Men film, there is no need to throw all of your eggs in one basket (Not saying Fox has done that). You keep it simple, and then as the films progress you add more characters. Now if you want to remove certain characters from the roster, you don’t create a situation where their fate is left in the air. You either kill them or you don’t . That can help alleviate some stress so that you don’t have to, for example, erase 5 movies from the cinematic timeline so that you can re-introduce 2 characters that you killed off way to dang soon.

Make Matthew Vaughn the ‘Kevin Feige’ of the Fox Cinematic Universe

"The thing that was exciting about it was bringing all these actors together. What a cast! But I've worked with great actors and I just thought, 'I've got to do my own thing.'" -Matthew Vaughn

In my humble and honest opinion, Matthew Vaughn has made one of the greatest X-Men films/CBM’s that I’ve ever seen. He is honestly the only person at Fox that knows what he’s doing. He’s the guy that I think can ‘lead the band’, so to speak. If they were to give Vaughn more control in the process of making these films, we’d have more hits than we have duds .

Color/Tone

”For those of you wondering…no leather suits.” -Bryan Singer

Another problem that I consider Fox to have is that they have not given any of the X-Men actual costumes that were similar to their comic book counter-parts. And with Sony, Warner Brothers, and Marvel actually making suits that look similar to their comic book counter parts, there is no excuse for Fox not to do the same .

And the tone of the films, which is fine, could still use SOME work. I also thought that X-Men films should be in-between The Avengers and The Dark Knight . Not to dark but not to light-hearted.

In Conclusion…

The way Fox has handled the X-Men has been sub-par at best. There is still a lot of work they need to do, and making a film that erases 95% of your cinematic timeline isn’t going to fix your problems for you.

As always, THUMB AND COMMENT BELOW. That would be much appreciated.
