BOX OFFICE: Everything Is Awesome,THE LEGO MOVIE Is A Blockbuster

The 3-D animated movie based on children's building blocks grossed an estimated $17.5M to $18M on Friday and is estimated to have a healthy 3-day total of $60M+. Currently it has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Which means the film is nearly loved by all critics. There are four critics which gave the film a rotten score, which means they were the weird kids growing up who preferred to play with LEGO's toy rivals, Playmobil or K'Nex. But critics aren't the only ones enjoying the film, audiences have bestowed an 'A' Cinemascore, which should provide legs. Coming in second this weekend, The Monuments Men. It grossed an estimated $7M yesterday and is expected to have a surprisingly respectable $22M. Even with an all-star cast, film critics marked it with a 33% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences seemed to enjoyed it, earning it a firm B+ Cinemascore. The other new film this weekend, Vampire Academy had a miserable debut with an estimated $1.6M on Friday, putting it in seventh place and a 3-day cume of $4.5M. Don't expect the film pick up any steam from word-of-mouth, audiences gave it a lackluster B- Cinemascore.

“The LEGO® Movie,” the first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO® adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, opens in theaters February 7, 2014. Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), it stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Charlie Day, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.



The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.
