BOX OFFICE: THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Likely To Stay At #1 For Second Weekend

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will pass $100 million domestically and $300 million worldwide at some point today. As for how that will play into the weekend, it's believed that the Peter Jackson helmed sequel will stay at #1 with a total of over $30 million. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (which opened on Wednesday) will fall short with $25 million, but is still expected to have a respectable five-day total of around $38 million. The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.
