Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, and I guess Jessica Jones all need to take place in the 70's. Marvel NEEDS to do this to expand the Marvel Universe from just 6 years. They need to establish that superheros have been in existence for a very long time. Let me break it down for the reason I believe it needs to happen.
1. Daredevil: The 'Man Without Fear'. Awesome awesome character, Marvel out did themselves with creating him. He needs to have existed in the 70's. In the MCU, Daredevil should have been in action from 1971 to 1983. He fits perfectly into the 70's. Daredevil is a very classic character that is the definition of hero.
2. Luke Cage and Iron Fist: 'Heros for Hire'. They as well as Daredevil fit perfectly into the 70's. A black man dealing with the hard times in the 70's would make the show awesome and give it that dramatic push it needs. Show how when he tries to help white officers they distance themselves from him because of the color of his skin. And how over the years of his career he gains their respect. Maybe have Luke's career go from 1970 to 1979. Iron Fist, I know few things about the character, but I do know his name is Danny Rand and he is trained in martial arts. I think he could fit in the 70's to. Look at China Town, New York. In the show they could have it be the base of his operations, have it be a very very gritty location were he spends most of his time. Have his career go from 1970 to 1982.
Jessica Jones: They could set Jessica up as a female private eye who has to deal with solving murders and dealing with the dirty dark secrets from large corporate operations. The 70's was well known for their crime and crime dramas. Marvel could easily make the Jessica Jones show be a very dark and gritty crime show. Her career could last from 1976 to 1983.
How They All Tie into Present Day S.H.I.E.L.D and Avengers: There are several ways you could do this. You could have a scene were Tony Stark and Nick Fury are discussing were the idea for the Avengers really came from.
Tony Stark: "So the idea from the avengers must have come from something other than the idea to bring a group of talented people together for a greater cause."
Nick Fury: "Nope, thats exactly were it came from. But it also stemmed from something else."
Nick Fury and Tony Stark leave their seats and begin walking down a hall that looks similar to a museum section.
Nick Fury: "The Defenders, the first time a group of heros ever tried to come together for a greater cause. It consisted of a man named Luke Cage, a blind lawyer named Matt Murdock, a female private eye named Jessica Jones, and a rich boy named Daniel Rand. They all had unique abilities. They all stood for good."
Tony Stark: "Ok, so you had them, where did they go? Tahiti?"
Nick Fury: "No....they fell apart...."
See, you could easily tie everything in together even if the Defenders (Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones) were based in the 70's.
