At the end of 2010's Thor, the God of Thunder destroyed the Bifrost (the rainbow bridge) in order to halt Loki's destruction of Jotunheim. That choice had many ramifications. One, Asgardians were, for the most part, stuck on their own realm, as the Bifrost allows for easy travel between the nine realms. Unless you're Loki, who knows of secret passages, or you've had Odin use a sizable portion of his powers to transport you somewhere, you're not getting off Asgard. Which then meant, that a group of invaders, known as The Marauders, could attack the other realms unmolested and the Asgardian could do nothing to stop them. When Thor: The Dark World begins, the Bifrost has finally been repaired and the Asgardians confront and defeat the Marauders.

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD is being directed by Alan Taylor ("Game of Thrones") and will be coming to DVD soon. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Zachary Levi, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Christopher Eccleston, and Idris Elba.
