TASM ended on a particularly mysterious note. We see Dr. Curt Connors dragged into a prison cell where he sits down on a bed. Moments later, a man appears from the shadows. Who he was, we are yet to discover, but due to his presence in the trailer, I figured I'd take a stab at a bit more speculation.
The man doesn't say much but we do get the idea that he knew Peter's father or possibly just knew something about his disappearance. Connors also seems to know this man to some extent. He tells him that he should leave Peter alone. That's where my speculation begins. What could this stranger possibly want with Peter? It would seem this man has some great scheme that involves Peter in some way. Just what is this scheme and how will it play out in these movies? Here's what I think:
The man pictured above is Ezekiel (not sure if his last name was ever revealed). He has powers similar to Peter Parker's which he gained in a much more mystical manner than Peter did. He showed up in a story called The Amazing Spider-Man: Coming Home. In this, it is revealed that Peter is involved in a totemic battle across the ages to determine the ultimate creature on the planet. This is why he has fought so many animalistic villains like Rhino, Lizard, Doc Ock and so on and so forth. The ultimate challenge of this being that he would have to defeat a being known as Morlum, who was supposedly immortal and could drain the energy out of his foes with every physical contact.
Ezekiel is the one who breaks this news to Peter. However, I see this going down much differently in the movies. I see them combining this above story with the 00 formula from the first movie. The man in the shadows may have come across as villainous but I reckon otherwise. I think he may be Ezekiel and he is ensuring Peter reaches his destiny as the top predator. To do this however, he probably has to give Peter ways to display his dominance, thus he may play a part in the introductions of Vulture and Doc Ock, or indeed any other villains they decide to throw into future movies. To support that, here's an image from the trailer that shows Massee's character wandering past Ock's tentacles and Vulture's wings.
So, where would all of this lead exactly? In an ideal world, Ezekiel would reveal himself later on in the game and we discover the whole origins of this totemic battle and then Spidey fights Morlun and we have the perfect end to a trilogy. Spidey would be pushed to his very limits, he nearly dies in the book, and we'd see Peter finally come to terms with his life as Spider-Man. This is the movies of course, so I wouldn't bet on an exact translation. I think the only suitable replacement for Morlun would be Carnage. Carnage is just one of those villains that you can really feel afraid of. Like Joker, the guy's utterly out of his mind and has no disregard for killing and has committed many a horrible crime. He can also push Spidey to his limits and would be a really engaging villain that we're yet to see brought to life on film.
Well, that's my idea. What do you lot think about this character? Who do you think he is and how might he be put to use in the future? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
