BOX OFFICE: THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Scores $8.5M In International Openings

Deadline reports that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took a total of $8.5 million on its opening day in a number of international markets, putting it well on track to to at least do as well as - if not better than - 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Analysts are predicting that the sequel will earn upwards of $85 million when it's released in North America tomorrow. The first instalment opened to $84.6 million, before going on to gross a total of $303 million domestically. The sequel is also released in an additional 49 territories on Friday, and despite a slightly later Japanese debut, an overall total worldwide cume of over $1 billion is expected. So far, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has grossed $2.8 million in France, and had the biggest opening of 2013 in countries like Holland, Belgium and Switzerland.
